The Day The Music Died

June 26, 2009

I haven’t read what everyone else has written about the death of Michael Jackson, and very rarely I’m prompted into writing about such occasions [if you can call it an occasion], but everywhere I look today it can’t be denied that his death has actually hit the world pretty hard. The last time I can remember people being so moved was the death of Princess Diana. So he must have been doing something right, right?

So why are people still hating on him, even after his departure from this planet? Honestly, it makes me mad.

Now, I’ve said this on Twitter already and I’m not going to bang on about it, in fact I’m only going to say this: No matter what his life became, or what you think of him – he should be remembered for being one of the biggest and brightest musical influences of our time. His performances were second to none and some of his music was pure genius. And that is how he should be remembered.

It is a sad day, there is no getting way from it – we think of these idols as immortal and it’s a short sharp slap in the face that everyone is vulnerable, even those who we see as untouchable. I was actually moved to tears listening to some of the fan tributes in the car earlier and I’m glad that in the eyes of his fans he was still known for greatness and not how the press portrayed him at times in his life. Thinking about it, Death is probably the best place for him, his troubled soul can now be at peace.

This is my favourite MJ track – Off The Wall

Elbow have led the list of winners at this year’s Ivor Novello Awards, picking up two gongs for singles from last year’s The Seldom Seen Kid LP.

‘One Day Like This’ was picked as the best song of the year, musically and lyrically, while its predecessor ‘Grounds For Divorce’ was named best contemporary song.

Frontman Guy Garvey said: “This is really something else. I’m gonna talk about being in the band for a moment.

“We’ve got this great support surrounding us from our friends and family but, on a personal note, I’d like to say that, if nothing else ever happens to me in my life, these four boys have made the whole thing worth every single second.”

Other winners at this year’s awards included The Ting Tings, who won the album award, and former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins for the special Ivors Inspiration Award.

Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood won the award for best original film score for his soundtrack to There Will Be Blood.

Blur’s Damon Albarn has revealed that he reunited with guitarist Graham Coxon over an Eccles cake.

The four-piece announced earlier this month that they would reform for two shows in London’s Hyde Park next July.

Speaking to Radio 4′s Front Row, Albarn said: “We just went for a walk and bought a bun, I think it was an Eccles cake, and sat in a doorway.

“It really felt like it was back to how it was when we were younger,” the singer added.

The band’s last album, Think Tank, was released in 2003, but only featured Coxon on one song.

Paul Weller – Cold Moments

February 26, 2009

Fast becoming one of my favourite Weller tracks. Although its from the most recent 22 Dreams album, which to be honest wouldn’t have won him any new fans, but older ones will recognise it as classic-heart-and-soul-on-a-disc-Mr-Paul-Weller.

PS. i can’t bloody well embed the video for you’ll need to click on the link. Embedding has been disabled by request apparently. For every bloody version i can find.

I have just watched the funniest, wittiest programme ever, with a banging soundtrack to boot. Plus 1 Its all about a bloke who needs to find a date for his ex girlfriends wedding, who just happens to be marrying, Duncan – From Blue. Its brilliant, I recommend it. Did anyone else catch it whilst waiting for the BB finalist?

Oh, and by the way – UK? Not only have you let me down with the Christmas No. 1, but voting Ulrika as the CBB winner? What are you lot on?? Well done, you bunch of knobs.

Prompted by James in my last entry, we [myself, James, and Dan, although Dan doesn’t know about it yet, but he will when he reads this], are going to post our favourite songs of the minute, you know – the ones you keep listening to on you iPod or on the car, so here goes.

1. The Streets, Blinded by the Lights
2. The Stone Roses – Tears
3. The Verve – Appalachian Springs
4. Nalin & Kane- Beachball
5. Editors – Release
6. The Courteeners – Not Nineteen Forever
7. Elbow – On a Day Like This
8. MGMT – Electric Feel
9. Kings of Leon – Taper Jean Girl

Those are my songs. There are more songs that I’ve been listening too, but I keep flicking back to those ones. If anyone wants a download, just ask and I’ll upload it for you.  if the mood takes me, i might stick the links in later.
